Kenny Rankin, Inside

Another artist who means so much more to me because of my experience seeing him live, accompanied by my closest HH friends at venues in Red Bank (Count Basie Theatre), Piermont, NY (The Turning Point), and several other intimate clubs. I tip my hat to my dearly departed friend Nazz who first turned us on to Kenny. There was no reason a group of teenage NJ boys in the Eighties would be paying close attention to this man’s tour schedule if only because we were so awestruck to hear in person such a soaring, magical, and commanding voice. No one held a note or showed range like Kenny. He personified the meaning of voice as instrument. To risk hyperbole, he was our group’s Frankie Valli. He also in his own inimitable way introduced us to some of jazz’s finest standards.
