Eva Cassidy, Live at Blues Alley

This is an album by an artist who died of melanoma at the age of 33 in 1996. Other than several posthumous collections, there’s really only one solo studio album to her name (Eva by Heart), which is very good, but I don’t think it fully reflects the range of this superb vocalist.

The story goes that when this album was recorded at a famous nightclub in Washington, D.C., Eva apologized to the crowd because she was suffering from a bad cold. Even at less than 100%, Eva, with her vocal control and tenderness, could wipe the floors with most singers of this and any era.

Eva Cassidy never knew fame on this earth, but there’s no question she was heaven-sent and would have been a star had she lived a full life.
