Dire Straits

There are two other Dire Straits albums that I prefer over this sterling eponymous debut album: Alchemy (Live) and Brothers In Arms. But this is where it all started for Mark Knopfler & Co., and what an auspicious way to arrive on the modern music scene in 1978. No nonsense, straight-ahead country-infused rock n’ roll. And, if you needed any more proof of this band’s weight, this production launched the release of “Sultans of Swing,” which, lick for lick, contains one of rock’s greatest songs and most glorious guitar solos.
