Aretha Franklin, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

This exercise is taking me down roads I haven’t visited in too long, such as listening to some of the greatest soul music of all time. As I delved into the catalogue of Sam Cooke, I came upon this album which was released a few years after Sam’s death. Aretha OWNs every track on this album. If you’ve ever thought that perhaps she doesn’t deserve the Queen of Soul moniker, just give this entire album a long, leisurely listen. It is a masterful performance. If we’re leaving behind any capsules for higher intelligence to probe, this should be among the recordings that prove the existence of (wo)man’s soul-dripping brilliance.
